A new Chicano art center will open in Riverside, CA, this fall.
The center, called “The Cheech Center For Chicano Art, Culture & Industry,” will feature a sizable portion of the Mexican American art collection of Cheech Marin, and comes after a long push to find the center a home.
Funds were finally approved last month by the city council of Riverside.
The center will replace a now defunct public library, which currently occupies over 61,000 square feet.
According to the New York Times, “the city will contribute about $1 million per year under a 25-year agreement to cover operating costs, and the Riverside Art Museum is funding the $13.3 million renovation costs for the former library building through a $9.7 million state grant and private donations.”
Marin, who made a name for himself in classic films such as “Born In East L.A.,” is a long time Chicano art collector and activist.
